Local News in Brief : Hotels, Union Agree on New Contract

The union representing 7,000 hotel and restaurant workers reached a tentative agreement on a new contract with several major hotels in Los Angeles, Beverly Hills and Hollywood, a management spokesman said Friday.

The two sides agreed not to discuss details of the pact until union members vote Dec. 9.

A hotel spokesman, however, said the contract would go into effect next April and expire in 1992.

The two sides have been talking since May.

While an existing contract is in its fourth and final year, there was a provision that allowed the two sides to reopen the deal to discuss health and retirement benefits.

Both sides then agreed to come up with an entirely new contract that would take effect once the current agreement expires, said Irving Baldwind, executive director of the Hotel Employers Council.

The Hotel, Restaurant and Bartenders International Union negotiated for its 7,000-member Local 11.
