A leading jewelry dealer said he lost half a million dollars in jewels when his briefcase was stolen in the lobby of a Manhattan hotel, police said.

Gianmaria Buccellati, 60, of Milan, Italy, was waiting to check into the Peninsula Hotel on Thursday evening when the robbery occurred, said Police Sgt. Raymond O’Donnell.

Buccellati, owner of a store bearing his name on New York’s fashionable Fifth Avenue, set his briefcase down and someone switched it for a similar case and took his, O’Donnell said.
