A voluntary no-smoking policy that requests spectators attending San Diego’s Jack Murphy Stadium not to light up was approved in concept by the Stadium Authority. If the policy is adopted after a public hearing Jan. 5, Jack Murphy would be the first professional open-air stadium in the country with a no-smoking plan, said Mike Gotch, a Stadium Authority member. Although the stadium policy, unlike a city ordinance, cannot be enforced by a municipal code, Gotch said that asking fans to stop smoking could prove more successful than coercing smokers. If adopted, the voluntary ban would take effect at the beginning of the 1989 baseball season.
