Police and the state’s Alcohol Beverage Control Department have begun a campaign to visit Westminster’s 200 bars, restaurants and stores and advise proprietors of the laws concerning sales of alcoholic beverages.

“It’s not a major problem (throughout) the city, but we do have drunk drivers drive away from bars, and some people who loiter in front of liquor stores and bother other customers,” Westminster Police Lt. Mike Schliskey said.

“The aim is to obtain voluntary cooperation from businesses. . . . Officers will be talking to the (liquor) licensees about sales to minors, sales to obviously intoxicated persons, loiterers, selling narcotic paraphernalia and about drinking in public.

“We have gone into problem areas before,” Schliskey said, but this is the first time the Police Department will canvass the entire city.
