Mexican President Carlos Salinas de Gortari removed the governor of Michoacan state from office after a weeklong occupation of municipal buildings across the southwestern state by opposition supporters. Salinas, who took office this week, appointed the governor, Luis Martinez Villacana, as director of federal roads and bridges. Salinas’ removal of the governor, who is a member of the ruling Institutional Revolutionary Party, was seen as a concession to the opposition, which had accused Martinez’s government of repression. The legislature named Jaime Genevevo Figueroa Zamudio, general secretary of the state government, as the new governor.
