Navistar International Corp. said earnings for 1988 soared to $244 million from $33 million a year ago. The 1988 figure includes a charge against discontinued operations of $15 million for a settlement of a class-action suit by the former employees of Wisconsin Steel. The 1987 earnings included an extraordinary charge of $113 million for the early retirement of debt. The Chicago-based truck and engine maker said 1988 was a strong year for sales. Navistar’s fourth-quarter profit rose 52% to $82 million, compared to the 1987 period.
