U.S. Relations With Nicaragua

Richard Boudreaux’s article (“Nicaraguans Leaving in Droves as Economy Sinks,” Part I, Nov. 20) unfortunately reflects the one-sided and biased reporting coming out of Nicaragua by the U.S. press. In describing in detail the exodus of Nicaraguans Boudreaux fails to point out that the cause of the admittedly sad state of the Nicaraguan economy is the Reagan Administration’s almost 8-year war to destroy the economy and bring the Sandinista revolution to its knees!

Even in the wake of Hurricane Joan, which killed 116 and left 300,000 homeless, the Administration cynically denied disaster relief to needy Nicaraguans and has refused to lift its economic embargo so that private relief agencies in the U.S. can attempt to fill the void.
