U.S. Relations With Nicaragua

Share

Here we go again. The Bush Administration is supposedly drafting new Nicaragua policy options (Part I, Nov. 17.) Read between the lines and they consist of negotiations designed to fail so that the Administration can ask for more Contra aid. Contra leader Adolfo Calero says it right out about his own plan. “It is a proposal that the Sandinistas are certain to refuse.” Such cynicism and hypocrisy! And why has the Arias plan supposedly failed? Because our government has done everything possible to sabotage it.

Meanwhile, the polls indicate that the large majority of Americans are opposed to Contra aid. And saddest of all, the killing and the maiming and the suffering go on, not only in Nicaragua but in El Salvador and the rest of Central America. It’s a tragedy for which our government bears a large part of the responsibility.
