Orange County leads the state in the number of elementary schools nominated for the 1988-89 California Distinguished Elementary School Awards.

With 28 of the 250 nominated schools statewide, Orange County tops all other counties, according to state Supt. of Public Instruction Bill Honig. Los Angeles County, the state’s most populous, has 25 nominated schools, and San Diego County, the second largest county in population, has 21.

The state Department of Education, which Honig heads, each year nominates schools for the awards. Nominations are based on how well a school has done academically, including California Assessment Program test scores, or how much improvement a school has made. The winning schools for 1988-89 will be announced next April.
