Ferdinand E. and Imelda Marcos have paid about $2 million for a penthouse condominium in a posh Montreal neighborhood, a newspaper reported today.

The Montreal Gazette quoted the condominium’s builder, Angelo Trimarchi, and sales representative Veronica Banco as saying the penthouse was purchased through an intermediary in Italy.

Banco said the Marcoses bought the penthouse sight unseen.

The said the building is still under construction in the city’s Westmount neighborhood and should be completed in June, the newspaper reported.

It quoted Trimarchi as saying the Marcoses bought the second most expensive unit in the building.

The couple are charged in the United States with stealing $103 million from the Philippines during Ferdinand Marcos’ 20-year reign as president and with defrauding U.S. banks of $165 million.

They currently live in Hawaiian exile in a house in Makiki Heights overlooking Honolulu that is worth at least $1 million.

Mrs. Marcos was recently reported having financial difficulties. Her lawyers said her assets are tied up in legal proceedings.

The Montreal building, when completed, will have six two-story penthouse suites, each with its own elevator and protected by an elaborate security system. The Marcos penthouse has four bedrooms, three dens and two Roman baths, the newspaper said.
