Blast Kills British Officer

HONG KONG —
A British officer serving with a Gurkha battalion died in an explosion of unknown cause at the Cassino Lines military base near the border with China, a military spokesman said Monday. The victim was Maj. James Richford, 34. The 900-strong Gurkha battalion arrived in Hong Kong in November, 1986. Among its duties are patrolling the border to stop illegal immigrants.
