David Shaw’s articles on the New York-headquartered national news media being heavily influenced in their determination of what is news because of their location in New York City is right on (Part I, Nov. 17-18, Calendar, Nov. 20).

As evidence, spend a week in New York City reading the New York Times and then read the following week’s Time magazine. Time’s selection of articles reflect the articles covered by the preceding week’s New York Times.

And, watch the major feature stories in the national business publications, such as Business Week, during the subsequent weeks. The seeds have frequently been planted by features in the New York Times.

That’s why public relations people like to have articles in the New York Times. Letters or articles submitted to editors or television assignment editors have to compete for attention with all other mail that comes into their busy offices. But the New York Times is delivered to nearly every editor’s living room every morning.
