Local News in Brief : Tustin : School Board Member Appointed to U.S. Panel
Gloria Tuchman, a member of the Tustin school board, has been appointed to a new federal panel that recommends national funding awards for schools.
Tuchman has been named as a national board member for the Fund for the Improvement and Reform of Schools and Teaching. She was nominated by former U.S. Education Secretary William Bennett.
Board members for the new federal group will advise U.S. Education Secretary Lauro Cavazos about possible projects for national education funding. During the current academic year, the school reform fund is scheduled to award up to $5.9 million in grants and contracts to campuses and to education agencies. One of 15 members of the board, Tuchman will serve a 2-year term expiring Sept. 30, 1990.
Tustin Unified School District Supt. Maurice Ross praised Tuchman’s latest national appointment: “It’s her most prestigious honor yet.”
He noted that Tuchman previously served on the National Advisory Council for Bilingual Education and is a member of the National Advisory Council on Child Nutrition. She is also treasurer of the Hispanic Caucus of the California School Boards Assn.
A member of the Tustin school board since 1985, Tuchman teaches first grade at Taft Elementary School in the Santa Ana Unified School District.
