Coors Ceramics has acquired a “significant” ownership stake in Cercom, a Vista-based company that manufactures high-performance carbide and nitride ceramics, Coors spokeswoman Kathy O’Connor said Wednesday.

Coors, based in Golden, Colo., purchased slightly less than 50% of the privately held company’s stock from Danbury, Conn.-based Union Carbide Corp. for an undisclosed price, O’Connor said.

Cercom “provides a strong strategic and technological complement” to Coors’ existing structural ceramic operations, O’Connor said, adding that no immediate changes are planned at Cercom, which has 35 employees.

Coors Ceramics also owns El Cajon-based Ceram, which also manufactures structural ceramic products and does custom grinding. Ceram has about 50 employees.

Coors Ceramics is Adolph Coors Co.’s largest subsidiary. Coors Ceramics manufactures ceramic and composite materials products.
