The Air Line Pilots Assn. asked the Transportation Department to reopen its fitness investigation of Eastern Airlines, saying a similar probe earlier this year amounted to a “rush job.” In a petition filed with the federal agency in Washington, the pilots group also said “particularly adverse circumstances have now arisen which plainly affect Eastern’s viability as an air carrier.” The pilots pointed in particular to the proposed sale of Eastern’s air shuttle to New York developer Donald J. Trump for $365 million. An Eastern spokesman declined to comment immediately on the union’s petition.
