Azusa-based Ioptex Research Inc., a leading maker of intra-ocular implant lenses, has agreed in principle to be acquired by Smith & Nephew, a diversified British-based health-care company. Under the agreement, which takes effect Jan. 5, Smith & Nephew will purchase all of the privately held equity interest in Ioptex from current shareholders for $236 million. Ioptex will become a division of Smith & Nephew but continue to operate independently under its current management.
