S. Africa Torture Case Settled, Priest Says

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa —
A black Roman Catholic priest who says he was tortured by police has announced that the matter was settled out of court for $11,000.
Father Smangaliso Mkhatshwa said Tuesday that authorities decided to resolve the “brutal, shameless and degrading assault” without a trial to avoid bad publicity.
