A convicted Dutch war criminal was arrested by Argentine police at his Buenos Aires home, 39 years after he escaped from a West German jail. Jan Olij, 68, reportedly told the arresting officers, “How come this didn’t happen before?” In The Hague, the Dutch government said it will seek his extradition. After his escape from jail in May, 1949, Olij was convicted in absentia of turning in members of the Dutch Resistance to the Nazis in World War II and was sentenced to 20 years in prison. The Hague asked for Olij’s arrest after Argentina indicated it has dropped its objections to extraditing war criminals who are naturalized citizens.
