The State : Schools to Get $235 Million

Spurred by record ticket sales thus far in fiscal year 1988-89, California State Lottery officials said they will transfer about $235 million to public education, the largest first-quarter transfer in the lottery’s three-year history. The $235 million equates to an average daily attendance figure of about $41 per student for the quarter and significantly exceeds first-quarter transfers for previous fiscal years--$109 million in 1986-87 and $139 million in 1987-88. The record education transfer of $235 million was due, in part, to nearly $600 million in combined Lotto and scratch-off ticket sales during the first three months (July, August and September) of fiscal 1988-89. “We are extremely pleased with our first-quarter performance because it shows we are on track with our corporate objective of steady increases in sales so that California public education can continue to receive reliable and predictable supplemental funding,” Lottery Director Chon Gutierrez said.
