South Korean President Roh Tae Woo replaced the top leaders of his party as he continued efforts to sever ties to his authoritarian predecessor, Chun Doo Hwan, who stepped down in February after eight years in power. Roh named veteran legislator Park Joon Kyu, who is considered a moderate, to be chairman of the Democratic Justice Party, with Roh remaining as party president. In other changes, Secretary General Park Jun Byung, a noted hard-liner, was ousted in favor of moderate lawmaker Lee Jong Chan. Also, party policy coordinator, Lee Seung Yun, was named chief party policy-maker. On Monday, Roh reshuffled his Cabinet and said he was planning further shake-ups to help defuse nationwide furor over Chun, who apologized to the nation last month for abuses under his rule.
