Layden Quits as Utah Jazz Coach

In a surprise move, Frank Layden quit as coach of the Utah Jazz today.

The announcement was made by Jazz owner Larry Miller, who said assistant coach Jerry Sloan will take over from Layden. Layden, who began coaching the team seven years ago and compiled a 277-294 record, cited personal reasons for his resignation. “Sometimes in the NBA, you feel like a dog. You age seven years in one. The pressure in the NBA is intense. It’s time to have my time,” he told reporters. “I’m leaving the team when we’re at the height of our popularity.” Miller said Layden will assume the duties of Jazz president, while current team President Dave Checketts will become general manager.
