School Confusion

I’m sure we are not alone in academia in applauding The Times for tackling editorially the issue of academic fraud. While instances of it appear to be rare, the ethical issues it raises--not to mention the financial ones--certainly deserve coverage.

We would like to correct one factual error in your most recent coverage of this issue, Daniel S. Greenberg’s Op-Ed Column in the Dec. 6 issue. He referred to an investigation two years ago involving a professor “at the University of San Diego.” Actually, that investigation was at the University of California, San Diego, and the professor in question has resigned from the UC faculty. The university of San Diego was not involved in any way.

It is sometimes confusing to us here in San Diego--and must be doubly confusing to a Washingtonian like Mr. Greenberg--trying to distinguish between two very different institutions whose names sound very much alike.
