Agassi and Chang Win Challenge Matches
Andre Agassi came back from a 5-2 deficit to beat Pete Sampras, 3-6, 6-1, 7-5, Friday night in the first round of the $300,000 Challenge Series at the Forum.
In the first match, Michael Chang defeated Brad Gilbert, 7-6, 6-4. Agassi will play John McEnroe tonight, after Ivan Lendl faces Chang at noon. The winner of Sunday’s final will earn $100,000.
Agassi trailed, 4-0, in the final set as Sampras recorded breaks in the second and fourth games. But the world’s third-ranked tennis player fought back with an aggressive baseline game.
Gilbert was a replacement for injured Stefan Edberg of Sweden.
