Edward James Olmos leaves his “Miami Vice” stint in January for some heavy duty directing assignments in 1989. First, “American Me,” chronicling the rise of a Latino criminal from the ‘40s into the ‘70s for Universal. He’ll follow immediately with “Blood in, Blood out” for New Visions, a contemporary look at organized crime to star Sean Penn. Both scripts are by Floyd Mutrux and Olmos will appear in a major role in the first . . . .

Jennifer Grey plays the title role in “Earl Murdoch’s Girl,” an Esparza/Katz production for Trans World Entertainment scheduled to film next March. The story, reminiscent of “Bonnie and Clyde,” concerns a bank robbing couple pursued by an obsessed FBI agent back in the 1930s. Sam Pillsbury directs the Richard Guttman script . . . . Also disproving the crime-does-not-pay theory are plans for Michael Mann to direct “Flamingo,” the story of Vegas mobster Bugsy Siegel. Joel Silver produces at Fox.

Dean Stockwell and Scott Bakula star in the fantasy comedy “Quantum Leap,” an NBC pilot that marks Stockwell’s entry into series TV. Bakula portrays a man who travels through time, inhabiting different bodies. Stockwell is his heavenly adviser. Don Bellisario directs . . . .

“Eating Raoul’s” crew is sequeling with “Bland Ambition,” a February shoot for Vestron. Paul Bartel hyphenates as director-co-writer with Richard Blackburn and stars opposite Mary Woronov. Anne Kimmel produces . . . . Julie Carmen and Rene Auberjonois join the cast of “The Kid,” filming in Arizona from a Gore Vidal script. Val Kilmer has the title role. William Graham directs.
