A Matter of Standards

Share

“Ban in Japan” in Part Two of View on Nov. 24 states that “nudity rules anger U.S. artists.”

Why should they? Doesn’t Japan set its own standards? Certainly we wouldn’t allow Japan to set our standards--or at least I hope we wouldn’t.

Isn’t this a cultural mind set prevalent in the United States that others need to heed to our standards and that if they don’t, they are “wrong”? I know this will be denied, but so often, especially as it concerns Japan in all aspects, we attempt to measure others by ourselves. We lack sensitivity to others--or is this nothing more than a manifestation of the so-called me-first syndrome supposedly pervading our society?
