The Department of Energy conducted an underground nuclear weapons test Saturday at the Nevada test site, 1,300 feet beneath Rainer Mesa, officials said.

The blast, whose force was less than the 150-kiloton limit set in the Limited Test Ban Treaty, was detonated 90 miles northwest of Las Vegas and was “very successful,” said Jim Boyer, a spokesman for the Department of Energy.
