In a program similar to Elderhostel and Interhostel but more upscale in prestige and price, Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., will offer programs in conjunction with Cornell Adult University starting in May.

For mature travelers interested in continuing education programs, this one provides a base for touring the scenic Finger Lakes area of New York state while enjoying the facilities of one of the most beautiful college campuses in the United States.

The university has scheduled than 28 one-week courses during the summer, from architecture and ethics to studio sculpture, portrait photography and even mountaineering.

A sampling of courses includes “Jerusalem Through the Ages,” “A Sometimes Serious Survey of American Humor,” “The World of the Insect--Strategy and Strategic Thinking in Business, Poker and War” and “A Visitor’s Guide to the Frontiers of Psychology.”

The non-credit courses will be taught by Cornell faculty.

The program, now in its 20th year, is aimed primarily at the mature adult. The campus also has a range of courses and activities for children, from tots to teens.

Courses start on Sundays. Accommodations and meals are included. The campus has a wide range of sports and recreational facilities.

Tuition for adults is $545 to $615 per person, depending on accommodations. Dorms have private baths. A few courses require a modest lab fee, but no other extras. Transportation to and from Ithaca is not included.

For more information, contact Cornell Adult University, 626T Thurston Ave., Ithaca, N.Y. 14850, or call (607) 255-6260.

A free brochure also discloses Cornell’s many 1989 Education Vacations, a series of weekend to multiweek field seminars and tours escorted by faculty members.

While escorting thousands of mature travelers on motor-coach trips in recent years, Jack and Laurie Webster of Main Street Tours have never lost a tour member. They don’t intend to change their record for their coming Southern Plantations tour.

“We’re taking them into a swamp,” Laurie said. “A real Louisiana Cajun country swamp with alligators and other critters.

“But we’re not worried. We have the same guide who has taken National Geographic into the area. He has assured us that it is not only safe, but one of the highlights of the area.”

The 23-day, all motor-coach tour starts in Los Angeles and includes such non-swamp features as New Orleans, Memphis, the Great Smoky Mountains and Nashville, with tickets for the Grand Ol’ Opry. A tour of Elvis Presley’s Graceland in Memphis also is included. Many meals are included.

The tour departs April 12, with sightseeing stops in Dallas and Houston. Price is $1,595 per person, double occupancy.

Miriam Tobolowsky, who operates the Los Angeles-based “Partners-In-Travel,” now in its eighth year of matching single mature travelers seeking compatible companions, has updated her 20-page guide, “To Your Good Health.”
