Kunta Kinte and Fiddler, two characters from 1977’s landmark miniseries “Roots,” are involved in a secret mission to lead a group of slaves to freedom on Christmas Eve in a new production airing Sunday on ABC.

“Roots: The Gift” (9-11 p.m. on Channels 7, 3, 10, 42) is set in 1775. Fiddler has accepted his life as a slave, but Kunta still dreams of freedom. When they go to a neighboring plantation to help with Christmas preparations, they are faced with helping others escape bondage.

LeVar Burton and Louis Gossett Jr. (in cover photo) star with Avery Brooks, Kate Mulgrew, Shaun Cassidy, John McMartin and Michael Learned.
