“NBC Nightly News” anchor Tom Brokaw flew to the Soviet Union over the weekend and, with Soviet permission, chartered a flight to Armenia to report for tonight’s broadcast on the devastation wrought by last week’s killer earthquake there, NBC says. His way was partly paved by NBC News vice president Gordon Manning, who is among NBC’s advance contingent in Moscow. It was Manning who arranged Brokaw’s exclusive interview this year with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev. Before the earthquake, Brokaw was to fly to Geneva to cover PLO leader Yassir Arafat’s speech to the United Nations. He may still do that Tuesday, NBC said, unless he decides to continue reporting that day from Armenia.
