Authorities imposed tight security in the Tibetan capital, a day after police fired on independence activists there, Western travelers said. China reported that a Buddhist monk was killed and 13 people were wounded when police fired into a crowd during the demonstration in a central square in Lhasa. Western travelers, however, said they believed that three people were killed and at least one foreigner was wounded. The Saturday clash was the third bloody confrontation between authorities and anti-Chinese protesters in the remote region since October, 1987. Tibet has been under Chinese control since 1951.
