Kin Visit Mandela at New Home
Nelson R. Mandela on Tuesday welcomed his first visitors--his wife, daughter and three grandchildren--to a secluded, guarded house that is serving as his new prison, his lawyer said.
Despite the setting in a scenic wine-producing district, the 70-year-old leader of the outlawed African National Congress leader is lonelier than before because he has no contact with other inmates, lawyer Ismael Ayob told a news conference.
Mandela, who has been jailed since 1962 and was ordered imprisoned for life in 1964 for sabotage, was moved last week to the house on a prison farm outside Cape Town.
Mandela’s wife, activist Winnie Mandela, daughter Zinzi and the three grandchildren restricted Tuesday’s visit to 80 minutes. They attended the news conference but declined to make statements.
