Worker Gets Probation in Radiation Possession
A former Wright-Patterson Air Force Base radiation safety officer was placed on probation by a federal judge Tuesday on a charge that stemmed from a 1986 spill of radioactive material at the base.
U.S. District Judge Walter Rice ordered James W. Lewis, 62, of Enon, to serve two years of probation on a charge of illegally possessing highly radioactive americium. The judge also ordered Lewis to perform 200 hours of community service.
Lewis pleaded guilty to a charge of knowingly possessing a quantity of unsealed radioactive americium that was not authorized by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. No one was injured in the spill of the radioactive powder.
