Pause and Reflect
The voters’ support of Proposition E (San Diego city district elections) was reflective of their interest in having a more direct vote in determining who would be their representative on City Council. In effect, the voter now has more authority regarding City Council decisions affecting their neighborhood, community and city, albeit through their elected council person.
Diminishing or transferring authority vested in City Council members would to some degree negate voter control won through the adoption of Proposition E.
I believe a waiting period of at least one year under the changed election system would permit a more objective review of the real effects of district elections. At the conclusion of that one-year period, the council may better determine what changes should be made to correct any imbalances created by district elections.
