The U.S. Navy, in a further scaling back of operations in the Persian Gulf, will reduce its force from 15 to 14 ships early next month, U.S. military sources said. In addition, U.S. warships will use radar to monitor U.S.-flagged vessels in the waterway instead of direct convoying, the sources said. The changes reflect a Pentagon judgment that the threat to shipping in the gulf has decreased since the cease-fire in the war between Iran and Iraq went into effect Aug. 20, the sources said.
