Bethpage, N.Y.-based Grumman Corp., rocked by a Pentagon decision to cancel a major bomber project, announced that it will eliminate 3,100 jobs, 2,500 of them at its Long Island operations. The cuts, to include 1,800 layoffs in January, will be completed by the end of 1989. Grumman also announced layoffs in January, 1987, and March, 1988. Grumman’s directors met and approved the layoffs after getting the decision to kill funding for Grumman’s A-6G bomber aircraft in the 1990 federal budget, according to Grumman spokesman Bob Harwood.
