More than 5,000 people demonstrated outside the Biblis nuclear power plant in Biblis, West Germany, to demand the closure of the facility, where a recently disclosed malfunction took place in December, 1987. Speakers repeated assertions that a serious nuclear accident nearly developed at the Biblis plant, 30 miles south of Frankfurt. Pressure for closing the Biblis plant erupted earlier this month after a U.S. technical newsletter disclosed that on Dec. 16-17, 1987, operators there allowed a malfunctioning cooling system valve to go uncorrected for 15 hours. A small amount of radioactive steam escaped.
