The record catch of Pacific giant blue fin tuna by commercial fishing boats sailing out of San Pedro went into its eighth week off the Southern California coast with the landing of the largest-recorded fish of its kind, a 1,009-pounder. The crew of the Sea Queen netted the fish off the west coast of San Nicolas Island. Larger blue fin tuna have been caught in the Atlantic, but this one set a record for the Pacific. Last week, the fishing boat Maria brought in 131 of the fish weighing 41,920 pounds--an average of 320 pounds each. The tuna are being iced and flown to Japan, where they are sold at high prices.
