Quebec Premier Robert Bourassa, in a compromise unlikely to satisfy many in Canada supporting language equality between French and English, decided to continue requiring that exterior business signs in the province be in French but ruled that signs inside businesses can also be in English. Canada’s Supreme Court ruled last week that Quebec’s language law, which requires all business signs to be in French, was unconstitutional and violated the rights of English-speaking people there. Those rights are protected in Canada’s Charter of Rights; however, Canadian provinces legally are entitled to opt out of specific parts of the charter.
