Polish leader Wojciech Jaruzelski called on the Communist Party to reinvigorate itself and be open to unconventional compromises with the opposition. In a speech opening two days of Central Committee debate in Warsaw on the party’s role, Jaruzelski urged top-level personnel changes and said the party is determined to remove “all remnants of Stalinism” and embrace “everything that is consistent with the spirit and realities of the time. We have to remove this damned wall that separates the party from the young generation,” he said. Sources said the meeting might result in the replacement of older Politburo members.
