8 With Stake in Immigration Ruling

These are the individuals involved in Thursday’s ruling on federal immigration law:

Khader Musa Hamide, 34. Federal authorities accused Hamide of being a “dominant leader” of the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine, but he has denied affiliation with the Marxist faction. A native of the Israeli-occupied West Bank city of Bethlehem, Hamide, who lives in Los Angeles, said he does not even know if the PFLP exists in the United States. He holds a master’s degree from the University of Oregon and came to the United States in 1971. He became a legal resident in 1978. He said he was a sales representative for a manufacturer of auto sun screens based in Portland, Ore.

Michel Ibrahim Shehadeh, 32, was identified by federal authorities as a “leader of the PFLP in the Los Angeles area and a confidant of Hamide.” But Shehadeh, of Long Beach, said he “never participated in any PFLP activities.” He is a native of the West Bank village of Bir Zeit. He arrived in this country in 1975 and has attended a number of colleges, including Pasadena City College and Cal State Long Beach. He has worked in area liquor and convenience stores.

Julie Mungai, 30. Married to Hamide, the native of Kenya entered the United States in 1975 on a student visa. She received a bachelor of science degree from the University of South Dakota and a master’s in business administration from the University of Oregon. She had been an accountant with Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. Inc. in Torrance.

Aiad Khaled Barakat, 27. Born in Jordan, Barakat has lived in the Los Angeles area for more than six years. He said publicity stemming from the case ruined a masonry construction business he operated.

Amjad Mustafa Obeid, 25. A native of Kuwait, Obeid married a fellow student at Cal State Long Beach, where he majors in civil engineering. He was married two days before his arrest and, as he recalled, “spent my honeymoon in jail.”

Ayman Mustafa Obeid, 25. Amjad’s brother, Ayman Obeid, is also a civil engineering major at Cal State Long Beach.

Naim Nadim Sharif, 30. Born in the Israeli-occupied Gaza Strip, Sharif, who lives in Northridge, entered the United States eight years ago. He studied at Glendale Community College between 1981 and ’83. He is employed at a nursery in Sepulveda.

Bashar Amer, 25. A West Bank native, Amer attends Cal State Los Angeles, where he is studying pharmacology.
