S.F.’s Poor Treated to a Posh Christmas
A unique Christmas program gave thousands of poor the rare chance Saturday to be fed by some of San Francisco’s fanciest restaurants and to take home expensive new dresses from designer shops.
“I’ve been here for 25 years doing a lot of programs for poor folks, but something like this is real special,” said the Rev. Cecil Williams, who organized the Glide Memorial Methodist Church Christmas Eve program.
More than 2,500 poor dined on food prepared by 22 top restaurants.
The church also staged a fashion show in which poor women and children modeled dresses worth from $300 to $500 each.
They got to keep them.
