Through the magic of digital sound, Walt Disney Pictures is restoring the original sound track to the 1940 animated classic “Fantasia,” which featured the Philadelphia Orchestra under music director Leopold Stokowski, for the 1990 reissue that will mark the 50th anniversary of the film’s premiere. Film conductor Irwin Kostel and a pick-up orchestra recorded a new sound track for the classic feature in 1982, and all subsequent reissues of the film used that sound track. But the Stokowski-led version will be heard in 1990; a spokesman for Disney described the tests of the digitally remastered original tracks as successful.
