About two dozen Seattle newspaper employees picketed their employers to protest a refusal to provide holiday pay on Christmas Day. A demonstrator dressed as “Scrooge” said the pickets in front of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and Seattle Times were aimed at drawing attention to the papers’ decision not to give extra compensation to employees required to work the holiday. The newspapers said they will not pay the premium on Christmas and New Year’s Day, both Sundays, but will pay it on the Mondays afterward. Mason Sizemore, Seattle Times president, said the newspapers have followed the same policy for 44 years: giving holiday pay for work on the day the holiday is observed by the Federal Reserve Board.
