Four slopes for men and two for women were opened at a resort north of Tehran as Iran kicked off its ski season, the Islamic Republic News Agency reported Sunday.

The segregated ski slopes were opened at the mountain resort of Dizin, about 30 miles outside the capital, which had its first snowfall Sunday, the agency said.

Iran’s government interprets Islamic law as dictating the strict segregation of the sexes in public activities where women are not veiled.

The agency, monitored in Nicosia, also said the resort of Shemshak north of Tehran was opened after sufficient snowfall in recent weeks.

The report said Dizin will host an international ski competition in February with six nations participating to mark the 10th anniversary of the Islamic revolution that toppled the Iranian monarchy.
