Thousands crowded the streets of Barcelona to see 241 cars and 155 motorcycles arrive from Paris in the first leg of the grueling Paris-Dakar rally, which for the first time takes drivers through Libya.

The competitors covered the 744 miles between Paris and Barcelona accompanied by 76 support trucks.

French motorcyclist Rene Fierre was hospitalized with a broken leg after his bike went off the road in central France.

The rally will take competitors through rough and sandy terrain of Tunisia, Libya, Niger, Mali, Guinea and Senegal, a total of 6,715 miles before reaching the beaches of Dakar Jan. 13.
