‘Good Idea, Bad Location’

Your editorial “Good Idea, Bad Location” (Dec. 11) deploring the proposed location of “Clouds of Steel,” the darling of the Gateway Committee, is right on!

Straddling the freeway is ridiculous, not only for the reasons you state, but also for the obvious hazard and disruption of the freeway, which you don’t mention.

Our freeways are plagued with gawkers. An officer simply giving a ticket brings traffic to a walk. An accident can be worse, not only on the side of the accident, but on the opposite oncoming side. It’s ridiculous, but it’s also a fact of life.

Can you imagine the freeway gawkers taking in the overhead gateway monument? Doesn’t Caltrans realize the disastrous potentials?

Conrad’s cartoon in the same edition is on the mark as usual, except he should include in the foreground the freeway jam of gawkers.
