Police guarded against looters in two suburbs of Nashville, Tenn., as residents began rebuilding homes and businesses wrecked by a Christmas Eve tornado that killed a man and caused 15 injuries. Bulldozers were clearing away rubble, and sounds of carpentry could be heard in both Franklin and Brentwood, where the 200-m.p.h. twister caused an estimated $30 million in damage. “We will rebuild,” Brentwood Mayor Harold McMurtry said. “It’s going to take some time, but we will rebuild.” Meanwhile, police assigned extra officers to patrol the area and one private security guard reported chasing about a dozen thieves away from the wreckage.
