Cuba’s economy will grow between 1.5% and 2.5% in 1989, Antonio Rodriguez Maurell, the head of the central planning board, told a meeting of the National People’s Assembly, which is Cuba’s parliament. The speech was published in the official daily newspaper Granma. He said growth of the gross social product, the communist equivalent of gross national product, would result from a bigger sugar crop and higher output of other agricultural products, improvements in oil and nickel industries and better results in the fields of electronics, medical equipment and construction materials.
