Polish Premier Mieczyslaw Rakowski appealed to the citizens of his nation to make personal sacrifices in 1989 to help the Communist government cut inflation--its main economic task for the year. Speaking on television after the main evening news, Rakowski said energy costs will rise in 1989 and called on workplaces and private citizens to conserve energy. In his twice-monthly address to the nation, Rakowski said: “It is possible to curb inflation but that will demand sacrifices and strong personal discipline. . . .”
