From Times wire service reports

Federal officials today announced the award of a $15.9-million contract to establish a nationwide data bank to store information on doctors and dentists who are either disciplined or sued for malpractice.

The 5-year contract was awarded to Unisys, an information systems company headquartered in Blue Bell, Pa. The data bank idea, contained in legislation passed in 1986, is to provide a way for hospitals and state medical licensing boards to avoid being duped by doctors and dentists who have run into trouble elsewhere and try to set up practice in a new state. Information in the data bank will not be available to the general public.
